Should you pick Mercenary?

The cleanest first hunt

Pick Mercenary first if you want the largest margin for error. Sword and Shield is the safest learning path; Hammer is the switch when you want stuns and a more forceful engage.

Editorial fit · five-point scale

Mercenary ratings by mode

These scores describe how naturally the launch kit fits each job. They are not measured win rates, and a practiced specialist can outperform the ordering.

Solo 4/5

Reliable against PvE and forgiving in messy fights, but ranged players can force long chases.

Trio 4/5

Stand between your backline and the threat. Your value is time and space, not topping a damage chart.

PvE 4/5

A stable first choice for learning bosses because block tools reduce the cost of imperfect timing.

PvP 3/5

Best when terrain or teammates help you reach a target; weakest when forced to cross open ground alone.

Tradeoffs first

Strengths and limits

A useful class guide should tell you what the kit cannot solve as clearly as what it does well.

What the kit gives you

  • High health and several ways to reduce or block incoming burst
  • Simple class loop that teaches the game's melee fundamentals
  • Sword and Shield can protect space while Hammer adds engage and crowd control
  • War Cry and frontline pressure create openings for ranged teammates

What you must manage

  • No true ranged weapon, so open terrain favors kiters
  • Burst damage is lower than specialist damage classes
  • Charging directly at a prepared Blackarrow or Sorcerer is usually a losing trade

Choose before spending

Mercenary paths

The fastest useful build decision is the branch. Skills, Talents, affixes, and team role become clearer after that.

Safe learner

Sword & Shield

Block and Perfect Block buy time, while Sword Tip stacks convert patient pressure into Stacked Slash payoff. This path rewards reading attacks more than chasing damage.

Best for
Beginners, PvE consistency, protecting a Trio
Starter skills
  • Shield Dash
  • Stonebreaker Slash
Early priorities
  • Stacking Blade
  • Rising to the Challenge
  • Indomitable Will

Disruptive frontliner

Hammer

Hammer trades shield security for Super Armor, forward movement, and area control. Skullcrusher helps close distance; Earthshaker punishes enemies who stay grouped.

Best for
Engage, stuns, grouped enemies
Starter skills
  • Skullcrusher
  • Earthshaker
Early priorities
  • Iron-Clad Body
  • Hammer of Convergence
  • Leap Step

First progression plan

Starter build order

  1. Begin on Sword and Shield and practice Perfect Block against predictable PvE attacks.
  2. Commit early Talent Points to one weapon path instead of splitting them.
  3. Use Shield Dash to change position, not only to start every fight.
  4. Move to Hammer after you can identify safe engage windows and enemy escape cooldowns.

Practical answers

Mercenary questions

Is Mercenary the best class for beginners?

It is the safest general recommendation at launch. Its health, block options, straightforward skills, and two understandable weapon paths leave more room for mistakes than the specialist classes.

Should I use Hammer or Sword and Shield?

Start with Sword and Shield for defense and learning. Choose Hammer when you want stronger engage, stuns, and area pressure and are comfortable giving up the shield.

Withered Knight

Execute alone, protect together

A heavy melee class with two unusually clear jobs: Greatsword applies Wither and hunts executions, while Polearm and Shield gives a Trio a barrier, peel, and ally protection. The defensive branch received official launch-day buffs.

Seer

Two doctrines, two different jobs

A hybrid class split between Reverent support with a Catalyst and Blasphemer dueling with a Mace. Reverent is the launch roster's clearest healer; Blasphemer gives up much of that team utility for drain, gap closing, and burst windows.
